Understanding Australian Income Tax

Australia uses a progressive income tax system, meaning higher portions of your income are taxed at higher rates. The first $18,200 you earn is tax-free, after which tax applies in increasing brackets.

$2026-27 Tax Brackets (Australian Residents)

Taxable IncomeTax Rate
$0 - $18,200Nil
$18,201 - $45,00015c for each $1 over $18,200
$45,001 - $135,000$4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
$135,001 - $190,000$31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
$190,001 and over$51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000
2026-27 Tax Cut: From 1 July 2026, the 16% rate reduced to 15% (legislated Stage 3+ tax cuts). This saves taxpayers earning above $18,200 approximately $268 per year compared to 2025-26.
Note: These rates apply to Australian residents for tax purposes. Non-residents pay different rates with no tax-free threshold. If you're unsure of your residency status, check the ATO guidelines.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is income tax calculated in Australia?

Australia uses a progressive tax system where different portions of your income are taxed at different rates. For 2026-27, the tax-free threshold is $18,200. Income above this is taxed in brackets: 15% up to $45,000 (reduced from 16% as of 1 July 2026), 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000, and 45% above that. Only the income within each bracket is taxed at that rate.

What is the Medicare levy?

The Medicare levy is a 2% charge on your taxable income that helps fund Australia's public healthcare system. If your income is below $28,011, you're exempt. Between this and $35,013, you pay a reduced levy. Some people may qualify for a Medicare levy exemption (e.g., certain foreign residents).

Should I include HECS-HELP in my take-home pay calculation?

If you have a HECS-HELP, VETSL, or other study/training support loan debt, you should include it to see your true take-home pay. HECS repayments are automatically withheld from your pay if you earn above the threshold, so including it gives you an accurate picture of what lands in your bank account.

What is the superannuation guarantee (SG) rate?

The Superannuation Guarantee is the minimum amount your employer must contribute to your super fund on top of your salary. For 2026-27, the SG rate is 12.0%. This is shown separately in the calculator as it goes to your super fund, not your take-home pay.

What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?

Marginal tax rate is the rate applied to your last dollar of income (your highest tax bracket). Effective tax rate is the average rate you pay across all your income, calculated as total tax divided by total income. For most people, the effective rate is lower than the marginal rate because of the tax-free threshold and lower brackets.

Are salary packaging or fringe benefits included?

This calculator provides a standard calculation for regular salary/wage income. Salary packaging (e.g., novated leases, extra super contributions) and fringe benefits can affect your take-home pay and tax liability in complex ways. For packaged arrangements, consult with your employer or a tax professional.
