Car Stamp Duty Calculator Australia 2026

General information only. These tools apply published duty rates. They are not an assessment, not tax advice, and not financial product advice. Exemptions and concessions can change the amount. Check the official sources linked on each page. In line with ASIC’s general-information guidance, we do not recommend a specific financial product.

What these calculators cover

Duty, not registration

The estimate is the duty line only. You still pay the state’s registration, insurance and any transfer or inspection fee through Service NSW, VicRoads or TMR.

New and used vehicles

New cars are usually assessed on the amount paid or the list price. Used transfers generally use the higher of the sale price and the current market value.

State-specific options

Victoria asks about green, primary producer and other passenger cars. Queensland asks about cylinders or a hybrid or electric drivetrain. New South Wales asks whether the vehicle is a passenger vehicle.

Property stamp duty is separate

Duty on a house or land uses different tables. Use the property stamp duty calculators if you are buying real estate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is car stamp duty in Australia?

Car stamp duty is the state tax charged when you register a vehicle in your name or transfer an existing registration. Revenue offices call it motor vehicle duty in New South Wales and Victoria, and vehicle registration duty in Queensland. It is separate from the annual registration fee, CTP or TAC, and any inspection charge.

Does this calculator include registration fees?

No. Each page estimates duty only. Service NSW, VicRoads and Queensland TMR also collect registration, insurance and transfer fees. Those amounts are not added here.

What value should I type in?

Use the purchase price including GST, and the market value if you have it. Used vehicles are generally assessed on the higher of those two figures. Queensland new vehicles with a published list price are assessed on that list price plus extras, even if you negotiated a lower sale price.

Do the three states use the same rate?

No. New South Wales charges $3 per $100, then $5 per $100 on passenger vehicles from $45,000. Victoria charges per $200, with a concessional green and primary-producer rate and luxury bands for other passenger cars. Queensland charges per $100 using the engine type (hybrid or electric, cylinder count) and a higher light-vehicle rate above $100,000.

Is this financial product advice?

No. The pages give general information so you can apply a published duty table. They are not a revenue-office assessment and not financial product advice. Confirm the amount with the relevant revenue or transport office. That approach follows ASIC’s general-information standard: we do not advise on a specific financial product.
