How Victorian motor vehicle duty is charged

VicRoads collects motor vehicle duty for the State Revenue Office when you register a vehicle or transfer the registration. Each published rate applies to the whole dutiable value, charged for every$200 or leftover part of$200.

Green and primary producer passenger cars do not use the luxury steps. Other passenger cars change rate once the dutiable value moves above$80,809, then again above$100,000 and $150,000. New non-passenger vehicles use a lower rate than a used transfer of the same vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Victorian motor vehicle duty rates from 1 July 2026?

SRO Victoria charges duty per $200, or part thereof. Green passenger cars and primary producer passenger cars stay on $8.40 at every value. Other passenger cars use $8.40 up to $80,809, then $10.40, $14 and $18 in the published luxury bands. New non-passenger vehicles use $5.40; used or transferred non-passenger vehicles use $8.40.

What counts as a green passenger car?

SRO Victoria treats a passenger car as green when combined tailpipe carbon dioxide is 120 grams per kilometre or less. A pure electric vehicle with zero tailpipe CO2 is included. The concessional rate applies to the whole dutiable value, including cars above the luxury threshold.

What is the luxury threshold used here?

The first other-passenger step is the 2026-27 Commonwealth luxury car tax threshold of $80,809, as published on the SRO current-rate table (updated 29 September 2026). VicRoads still shows an older $80,567 figure on its fees page. This calculator follows the SRO table.

Does this include VicRoads registration or TAC?

No. VicRoads states that registration fees, Transport Accident Charges and the duty itself are not part of market value, and they are not added to this estimate. The result is motor vehicle duty only.

Is this the same as land transfer duty?

No. Buying a house uses a different SRO table. Use the Victoria stamp duty calculator for property.
