How NSW motor vehicle duty works

You pay duty when a vehicle is first registered in New South Wales, when registration is transferred, or when an imported second-hand vehicle is registered in NSW for the first time. Service NSW collects the duty for Revenue NSW.

The published scale is a flat $3for each $100 of value, rounding any leftover dollars up to the next $100. At$45,000 that low-rate amount equals $1,350. From that point a passenger vehicle pays that base plus$5 for each further$100 or part of $100.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is NSW car stamp duty calculated?

Revenue NSW charges motor vehicle duty at $3 for every $100, or part of $100, of the vehicle’s dutiable value. Passenger vehicles worth $45,000 or more pay $1,350 plus $5 for every $100, or part thereof, of the amount above $45,000.

Which vehicles stay on the $3 rate above $45,000?

Revenue NSW excludes motorcycles, buses that carry more than nine people, hearses and disability vehicles from the $5 passenger band. Choose “not a passenger vehicle” for those body types.

Is duty based on the purchase price or the market value?

For a used transfer, Revenue NSW and Service NSW use the sale price or the market value, whichever is higher. For a new vehicle, Revenue NSW uses the amount you paid, including GST. The Duties Act dutiable-value rule is the greater of consideration and market value. Enter both figures when they differ.

Does this include NSW registration costs?

No. The result is motor vehicle duty only. Service NSW also collects registration, vehicle tax, CTP and any inspection or plate fees. Those charges are outside this calculator.

Is this the same as stamp duty on a house?

No. Property transfer duty uses a different Revenue NSW table. Use the NSW stamp duty calculator for land or a home.
